Created by and for soccer fans, Howler is a U.S.-published quarterly magazine reporting on and celebrating the world’s most popular sport—its history and culture, its players and supporters, and occasionally even its vilified referees. With entire sections devoted to complex information like player statistics and match analyses, Howler needed a cohesive visual language to communicate the most intricate information to its readers. When our team was handed the reins (or was passed the ball, if you prefer) of the magazine’s design, we delved into the world of soccer, bringing each feature, photo essay, and infographic to life with tons of color and zany illustrations. Since completing Howler‘s overall redesign, Metaleap has also designed each subsequent issue.
Howler was awarded “Best Redesign” in the 2018 Society of Publication Designers awards, and was a finalist in three other categories including “Magazine of the Year.” It was nominated alongside publications such as New York Magazine, The California Sunday Magazine, The New York Times for Kids, The New York Times Magazine, Glamour, National Geographic and GQ Style.
