Founded in 1921, Science News had long earned trust as a twice-monthly source of accurate, accessible science journalism. In 2025, the publication transitioned to a more substantial, visually immersive monthly format. Metaleap was invited to reimagine the magazine for today’s readers—honoring its legacy while enhancing its relevance. Our redesign prioritized rich storytelling, expanded coverage, and a more tactile reading experience. We increased the page size and count, upgraded to premium paper, and more than doubled the use of high-impact visuals—photography, illustration, and data visualization—to bring clarity and energy to complex ideas.
For the first issue, we did what we often do: set the stage. We designed the debut, then handed off a full toolkit—files, templates, a design guide, even recommended photographers and illustrators for features, columns, and more—so the team could keep building with confidence.
For this case study, we stepped back to imagine the bigger picture. We created comps that sit alongside commissioned art, using work from some of the recommended artists to show what future issues could aspire to be. And while Science News has officially shifted to a monthly, perfect-bound format, we envisioned something more ambitious: a quarterly edition with extra pages, greater presence, and the weight of a collector’s edition.
